Educational and fun - if it still worked!

Reviewer: J. Mitchell,
Smart Globe started working sporadically then stopped working completely. Called Oregon Scientific and was told if you update it online or plug it in with batteries installed, it can cause problems. We have done neither to the globe. O.S. only answer was they would have new pens available this summer for around $69. Only had globe 4 months, so don't buy unless you want to throw away your money and then some more when the pen stops working.

When it works is great, but is not so smart if the battery is low, sometimes you have a warning sometimes you dont, it only starts acting like if it is broken (or maybe is not working in the first time)
The Oregon Scientific SmartGlobe v3 is a great educational tool to get kids excited about geography.

Our grandson's face just lit up when he opened this gift. Once we had it working, he was "traveling" all over the globe to learn about different areas that were already of interest to him. Then, he started to test other locations. It provides a better relational perspective (one country or continent compared to another) than you can get in a one-dimensional computer program.

The fact that you can update it via the web makes it an ideal continuing resource for him for the next few years and subsequently for his sister. I would highly recommend it.

DO NOT BUY THIS GLOBE!!!!!

I purchased this globe for my 10 year old nephew for his birthday on June 25th, 2009. In July, my sister tried to update the globe using the USB pen, but after doing so it no longer worked. She immediately called the Oregon Scientific customer service number, which was very difficult to locate online. After waiting almost an hour on hold, she finally got a representative who told her that the pen just needed to be reset. She tried resetting it several times, but it still did not work. She is a busy mom and does not have hours to waste with incompetent customer service agents and so did not call back until after Christmas. Needless to say, she was informed that she would need to buy a new pen (costing almost $70) which is conveniently no longer covered under the warranty. This is so infuriating. I have been an AMazon customer for years and buy lots of childrens toys and educational games here. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with any Amazon product!!!!!
Replacement Version - Jury Still Out

We purchased a previous version of this globe from Costco. It immediately broke when we tried to download the software and use the AC/DC plug in (WITH the batteries installed...who doesn't do that?!). Contacted the company and after 2 weeks...finally got an RMA # to return our broken globe. The very same day, this globe arrived at our house. Clearly, the company knows the older version had problems since they mailed the replacement before I got the broken one out the door. This globe DID NOT come with an AC/DC adapter. Makes me wonder if it will cause this globe to crash and burn too...I'm NOT going to try any AC/DC connection until I read more reviews. Has anyone has success with the AC/DC adapter and the software working??? For now, sticking to the batteries and the loaded version of the software...with errors included. I'll contact the company...again, about the lack of AC/DC adapter in the packaging. If you are buying this for the first time, just be careful. READ the instructions BEFORE using it.
uncorrect nationality information

I can't get any information about Taiwan which is an independent country next to China. When I click on Taiwan island, it only tells me "pacific ocean", and the color of the island is the same color as China which mistakely educates users that Taiwan is china. I strongly recommend that educational toy producers should provide correct information for users the fact not the manipulated idea.
Where is Taiwan???

The Pros-

1. Very educational and not just for the kids.
2. Multiple levels of learning including games etc...
3. Both my children of 3yrs and 5yrs enjoy playing with it.
4. cosmetically looks good. Doesn't look cheap.

The Cons-

1. Missing or incorrect information about some of the locations. A couple examples are:

- Taiwan doesn't exist in the software. If you touch the island you hear "Pacific ocean"

- Kashmir doesn't exist in the software. If you touch Kashmir you hear "the Islamic Republic of Pakistan"

2. It is difficult to accurately point the Pen on smaller targets such as capital cities which is part of one of the games. During the Find the Capital game you will point at the correct city but will get it wrong because it doesn't register.

Overall it is a decent educational toy but seems to be programmed with chinese politics and not western views.
Wonderful Globe

I purchased this for my son's 7th birthday and he absolutely loves it. There is so much information it's unbelievable. The interactive "Passport to the World" book that's included is a wonderful addition to the globe. It goes into other interesting facts with respect to animals, trees, plants, dinosaurs and historical people. Another reviewer mentioned that this globe did not come with a AC adapter but ours did! I think they've included it since his post.

You will not be disappointed with this globe.
NO AC Adapter , there is no one available from amazon to answer

This is a very stylish design and is so educational. Every touch of the pen gives new educational information. We have not fully played with every function there are so many to choose from. I highly recommend this product and anticipate more use for geography and world history as my son ages.
Enjoyable for all ages

A wonderful gift for my 11 year old daughter, we all spent hours exploring the Globe and the fun keeps going. One of the best gifts for someone who dreams of traveling all over the world. Great for your imagination. Highly recommend.
